Fat Kid Adventure #35 [NYC Edition]: Ono (Manhattan/West Village/Meatpacking District)

(Originally posted on September 8, 2007)

To prevent a streak of bad restaurants, we opted for Ono for dinner. This is a really expensive Japanese fusion restaurant located inside Hotel Gansevoort on 9th Ave. Part of the China Grill group, this joint features a nice dim and classy atmosphere with a club in the back. Rachel and I shared a $62 plate (balllllin) - the Surf & Turf - Kobe beef (tender!!!) and crab legs - quantity is definitely NOT small. The salmon sushi was not particularly impressive, but did cost $7 per piece (yes piece not roll). The plum BBQed half duck was delectable - sweet, a bit tangy (reminiscent of the Hoisin sauce), and slightly spicy. The seaweed salad was a bit bland but did come with a slew of other add-ons - mushrooms, mayo, and different shreds of veggies. Johnny got the Kobe beef tartare with ponzu, quail egg, and crispy sesame wafers - $23 of fancy but I did not try. The sides we ordered: shizo fried rice (biggest portion ever seen) and wasabi mashed potatoes (creamy creamy creamy with a slight kick from the wasabi peas). Definitely expensive, definitely interesting, and definitely worth going.
