Fat Kid Adventure #85: Miramar Beach Restaurant (Half Moon Bay)

(Originally posted on July 19, 2008)

First off, there is quite a history behind this joint - used to be a roadhouse and a illegal liquor drop-off point slash whore house back in the Roaring 20s. What's more, it was ran by this redhead who was nicknamed "Boss." What a great place to do Anniversary dinner, eh? Well, since it was anniversary, which means a boatload to both of us, we dropped it balla-style tonight.

Anyway - the atmosphere is casual to classy. They had a nice jazz band playing, and the lighting was dim but not romantically dim. We were sat with an ocean view, but too bad it was cloudy. Actually, it will always be cloudy in this town. The dress code is also casual. A range of people come here, we were parked between an Aston Martin and a Honda.

Server was a Hispanic gentleman - very nice and very professional. He served up 2 virgin pina coladas - great to moist the palate.

The appetizer was Seafood Margarita - ceviche style Dungeness crab, shrimps, scallops, and true cod in a lime-flavored tomato relish with chilies, cilantro, and a touch of blue agave tequila. Came in a big ass martini glass and looked like shrimp/fish/crab all up in a salsa mix, this filling appetizer tasted great as a dip with some tortilla chips. Splash a little lime in the mix, dip it and scoop, and you got yourself a nice, mildly spicy seafood ceviche.

We both ordered the Steak Dianne Combo for entree. It features pan-seared filet mignon (we had it cooked medium) finished with cognac and sea scallops wrapped with Applewood bacon, all that with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes to accompany. This is QUITE the filet mignon - very tender, very juicy, easily cut, a treat for the mouth. The sauce on the filet mignon is delicious, and I think the cognac definitely helped. It has been quite a while since we have eaten beef, and this was a 1-inch thick piece, and it was just a bit overwhelming. The scallops were very soft and the bacon on the outside provided a salty introduction before the soft near-neutral inside. Meat and seafood both on one dish - yay!

For dessert, we ordered bread pudding, which features bread, custard, apples and raisins baked with cinnamon and brown sugar, and it is served warm with caramel sauce. Boy, this bread pudding was RICH. You can't even tell that it was bread. Maybe it was a bit too sweet, but the texture was fine and the taste is outstanding.

We also ordered a caramel latte and a mocha to accompany the dessert. The caramel latte was a bit lacking in the caramel department, but otherwise it was your run-of-the-mill caramel latte. Mocha was fine.

In general, this restaurant is pretty good on the culinary side, but may not be the type of place you want to go for a really romantic anniversary - the atmosphere just doesn't cut it. This is more of a nice, casual restaurant with an expensive menu and a great window section for the beach.
