Fat Kid Adventure #80: Ginseng (Mountain View)

(Originally posted on July 17, 2008)

Located in downtown Mountain View, this Korean BBQ place has a decent atmosphere, though a little on the quiet side. The restaurant features large tables with both grilling and hot pot capabilities.

Rar and I ordered the seafood dol sop bi bim bap aka BBB ($11) and juicy tender loin bul go gi aka BGG ($19). Little sides automatically come with anything you order - kim chi, picked seaweed, bean sprouts, tiny sardines, etc. For the seafood BBB, it came with spicy sauce (add to taste). BBB had eggs, rice (some crisped), carrots, bean sprouts, cucumbers, shrimplettes, crab meat, mussels, calamari - awesome mix and awesome taste. Compounded with my recent love affair with spiciness, this was a pretty good dish. I don't know if it is just me, but I love the rice when it is just slightly burnt and has that crispy crunch when you bite down.

The beef was pretty fun to cook. The grill was HOT, it cooked the the beef quite fast. The meat was already marinaded and the seasoning is fantastic. The key is to cook it all the way through, because I was trying to grill a short rib but it took just really long to get it completely cooked - actually had to put back on the grill since I bit into pure rawness, which is quite confusing because I swear meat that thin cooks faster. The grill itself is legit - the fire is fierce and the sizzling from the meat's greasy portions is a satisfying sound to hear. The taste of the meat itself is tender (as advertised) and flavorful, the good ol' Korean BBQ kind of flavorful.

Nice place to come, though you won't see many people for some reason. The food is not bad at all. If you look on Yelp, there were apparently couple incidents of credit card skimming but I don't think that's happening anymore. Other than that, the service is decent, and food comes quite fast. The free sides are immediate, the seafood BBB came quickly, and the BGG (raw) was brought over pretty fast.
